Regarding the Las Vegas shooting:
Automatic assault rifles do not need to be legal in the United States or anywhere else. Yes, yes, the right to bear arms is a Constitutional right. Okay, no problem. Personally, I’m not a fan of handguns, shotguns, rifles, semi-automatic weapons — actually, I’m not a fan of any guns, but… fine. With some protections in place, fine. But c’mon, most gun owners say they have a gun either for protection or hunting, and…
HAVING AN AUTOMATIC WEAPON IS NOT EXACTLY SOMETHING YOU’RE GOING TO CARRY ON THE STREET FOR PROTECTION, OR TAKE INTO THE WOODS TO SHOOT DEER.
And yes, yes, criminals will get the guns / weapons they want anyway, I know, but can’t we at least make it harder for them to get their hands on weapons like these in the first place? When I’ve been playing too many games on my iPad, I put it in the other room — out of sight, out of mind. It doesn’t prevent me from playing, but it helps. It’s a simple principle of psychology. And studies have shown that people who put their candy in their desk drawer instead of on top of their desk eat significantly less of it. Can’t we *at least* make it harder to get guns? Please??
Stop being brainwashed by the g*ddamn NRA.
My European, Canadian, and down-under friends are all just baffled about gun laws in the U.S. A kind of, “What the hell is wrong with you people??” attitude. I want to be a patriotic American, but it’s hard when we continuously do stupid things to ourselves.
Love this video that illustrates why our gun laws need to be updated. It illustrates the kind of gun the founding fathers had in mind when the Constitution was written:

I so totally agree with you. My family are hunters, in fact, we have a ranch of about 200 acres and use it for recreation as well as hunting. Well, the men use it for hunting because none of us “girls” hunt. So, yes, we do own many rifles and hand guns. However, we do not own any automatic weapons! I think those are weapons of mass destruction as seen in Las Vegas. We do need some new gun laws. All of the guns in my family were obtained legally and are registered. We are all law abiding and our son is actually a San Antonio Police officer and I worry about him daily. I do not like guns of any kind! My family does so I accept their views. Yes, the criminal will always be able to get the guns he wants through illegal means but that doesn’t qualify for the rest of us. So, I do agree we need new gun laws to maybe, just maybe, make it a little harder for the bad guys to obtain. You have voiced my thoughts on this precisely and I thank you for it. I have voiced my thoughts with the NRA and our congressmen before and it has not done one bit of good. What else can we do? ——I have no idea!!!
The Real Person!
Me personally, I don’t ever want to own a gun. I don’t ever want a gun in my house. But other people do. Okay. Cool. If they educate themselves and lock their guns up properly, then fine. But we recognize that a car is a weapon, right? That’s why we have lots of laws and restrictions around who can and can’t drive. We make people prove they know how to use a car before they get a license, and then if they mess up, we take that license away. And that’s just a car! How much more necessary are such strict laws of access for *literal* weapons?? Anyway. I know I’m preaching to the choir. I just think there’s got to be some kind of common sense compromise that both gun lovers and gun revilers can both live with. 🙂 Thanks for your comment, Dorothy, as always.
