1,345 words today. 70,986 total in the manuscript.
You might be looking at that number and wondering why it’s so much higher than all my other numbers for the week. There’s a reason for it: I accidentally tricked myself.
A while back, during the last stint of determined productivity I had before I started my grad program, I got an app called Freedom. In a nutshell, Freedom allows me to lock myself out of everything on my computer except for Scrivener, which is what I use to write. (Both products are awesome, btw, and well-worth the investment.) I set Freedom up in such a way that for certain time blocks, I cannot use my computer for anything except writing, and once the block of time starts, there’s no way for me to stop Freedom from doing its thing.
When I started school, I eliminated most of the blocks of time I had built into my schedule for Freedom to run. I left an hour on the weekends… and this morning, I discovered that I’d also left Friday until 7am.
Summer vacation means that I haven’t been getting up before 7am lately, so I didn’t realize Freedom would still block me. So when I sat down at my laptop with my coffee just before 6am this morning, I opened up my laptop with the intention of turning in my final project for my English language learners class, then checking Facebook, maybe the news… and instead, Freedom kicked in and told me I had to write.
Once in a while, I manage to outsmart my own bad habits. 😉
